Why Mentoring is Essential for Success in Today’s AI-Driven, Post-Pandemic Workplace
I have been studying and following research studies on the impact of the pandemic (and now AI) on organizations and have written quite a bit about these.
Over the past few years, the younger generations have been impacted by the different changes in organizational work arrangements.
Following the pandemic and now the resurgence of AI, there has been significant changes in the way work is structured and designed in corporate organizations.
Human contact has been greatly diminished and, in some cases, eliminated by remote working. Dare I say these changes are here to stay for the foreseeable future even with the clarion call to return to the office.
The simple fact that the younger professionals cannot learn from the experienced professional in the workplace through regular contact and observation, has created a leadership development and succession gap.
A recent study published in Fortune magazine reported that GenZs are not being promoted to managerial roles because they are not ready, and do not have what it takes to operate at that level.
Ironically, 70% of GenZs surveyed in the same study said they are not willing and ready to take up managerial positions and would rather continue as individual contributors. Right, there is a leadership pipeline crisis for corporate entities.
As someone who has developed and deployed various leadership development tools in organizations over a 20+ years period, I know what works and what does not work.
Mentoring is a tried and tested tool in fostering leadership development in organizations and it has never been “out of fashion” because it is not a fad. It works and has been experienced by practically every successful and effective leader at some point in their journey.
As Gen Zs navigate an ever-changing landscape, mentorship offers a beacon of guidance and support. By investing in mentoring relationships, both individuals and organizations can cultivate a generation of confident, skilled, and resilient professionals ready to tackle the future.
Embracing mentorship is not just beneficial for Gen Zs—it’s a win-win for everyone involved.
