Sustained Performance from the Core
Elite athletes irrespective of the sport benefit from a strong core. At a high level, a strong core provides strength, stability and improves speed. For runners, the strong core muscles prevent wobbling. And here is where it gets interesting, core strength also significantly improves balance, meaning that you recover quickly from missteps small and large.
To lead effectively and with sustained impact, the leader needs to operate from a strong core. That is what I have chosen to call Core of Excellence. I describe the effective leadership as impactful and sustainable leadership. It is not a fleeting quick spark and it is over thing. That is why leading from the core of excellence is critical to sustaining impactful and successful leadership.
To lead from the core of excellence does not mean that you will not make mistakes, or you will not experience failures, like the athlete with a strong core, it means that you will recover quickly from such errors and will be able to stand again because you have stability.
How do you build a strong Core?
Anyone who exercises, and does core exercises knows exactly how painful, how tough, how challenging core exercises are. Anyone involved in building strong core knows how gradual, how incremental the effects of core exercises are. Core exercise take a while before you see the effects in your body. It requires continuous work to strengthen the various muscles crisscrossing to enable a strong core.
It is not any different from building your core of excellence from values, making it part of your life, part of your daily decisions, a life style. It becomes ingrained…the muscles are so strong and defined that your body is completely sculptured in and with your values. It is your six-packs, 4 packs. In order to get to 6-packs, you go from 2 to 4 and when you finally get the six packs, you have to work hard to maintain 6-packs. You can lose 6-packs muscle definition in just weeks although it may have taken you months and sometimes years to build it. That is how it is with core values. One negligence, one compromise can destroy years of hard work and goodwill.
Why Strong Core Matters.
You want to operate consistently at the level of excellence as a person and most especially as a leader, you have to build your core. Like the athlete, poor form slows you down, you fatigue faster and you become prone to injury. You have to build your center. Your strength flows from there, your speed flows from there. Your very essence flows from there. Like the athlete, your peak performance, your ultimate achievement begins with consistently maintaining a strong core and using that core to power your performance.
And you cannot fluff your way to a strong core whether as an athlete or a leader. No, it has to be something that you are consciously building, it has to be intentional. You need deliberate practice and endurance. It is gradual. But it pays off because once it becomes who you are, you operate effortlessly from that strength. You cruise, you excel from your core of excellence.
In my work, this is what I do. I help leaders build that core of excellence. A fully defined 6-pack values-based leadership core is achievable. We identify the core muscles that need strengthening. We start with your God-given strengths, and we build it from there using a well-defined plan just like the fitness trainer would do.
